Description and specs

The story of Grant Burge is one of the past, the present, and the future. Planting their roots in the Barossa Valley in 1865, the Burges began as a family of devoted vignerons. For five generations, they spent their days toiling on the land, understanding the soil, and from it, growing grapes that would become premium wines of today.

Tasting Notes
COLOUR - Inky purple, Deep and dark with bright hues
NOSE - Dark chocolate, mocha, plum with caramel lift. Sweet spice and cacao nib. Although serious Shiraz black fruits show the layers are extended with earth and vanilla.
PALATE - The tannins are firm but fine, with a full weight and texture carrying liquorice, black spice and some juniper. Full with intense flavours, the wine carries through for an intensely long finish
VINEYARD REGION - Barossa
VINTAGE CONDITIONS - The 2019 vintage was one of the driest we have experienced. Below average winter rainfall, coupled with a dry spring and summer resulted in naturally lower yields across the vineyards. These conditions resulted in rich and concentrated wines, although low in quantity. Chocolate and coffee bean with hints of cinnamon, vanilla & blackberry.
A silky smooth palate full of pure fruit sweetness. A hint of popcorn kernel on the back palate driven by the French and American oak combination. Ripe and firm tannins that are destined to evolve this wine into an absolute classic.

Reviews
94 Points - Andrew Caillard MW
Deep crimson. Lifted dark plum, blackberry, chinotto aromas with mocha/ wood varnish notes. Densely concentrated palate with plentiful saturated inky dark fruits, fine persistent grainy/ chocolaty tannins, attractive mid-palate volume and underlying roasted walnut notes. Finishes claret-firm and bitter-sweet with plenty of mineral length. Generous and vigorous. Drink soon – 2030 14.5% alc

92 Points - James Halliday in the 2023 James Halliday Wine Companion
Shiraz sourced from the Filsell, Cameron Vale, Materne, Stansborough and Colin Burge vineyards, aged for 18 months in a mix of old and new French and American oak. Consistency and inherent drinking enjoyment has long been a trademark of the Burge wines. Here, there is flesh and sinew, fruits dark and black, layers of spice and tones of earth, deep spice and chocolate, with fine firm tannins and a dark savoury sheen on the finish.
