The Sony PlayStation 3 has had well over half a year to settle into the Australian gaming market. So how does it stack up against its rivals?
When the PS3 arrived back in March, it was the most eagerly anticipated gaming console we've seen yet. And the good news is that it's more than just a games device: the PS3 is best described as an entertainment hub for your lounge room.
And it's lucky that the PlayStation 3 is more than just a gaming console. With its price tag, it would want to be. (Though in general the price has become more affordable in recent times, with many retailers offering special prices and value-added bundles.)
However, when you consider that the PS3 is also a Blu-ray player - so you can play those high-definition movies at home - the cost suddenly doesn't seem that outrageous. You can also use the PS3 to manage photos, access the Internet and store your music, so it's entirely fair to say that the device is more of a media server than over-priced games console.
But when the PS3 kicks into games mode, it does it well. The graphics and audio are exemplary, though be warned that you will need a 1080p high-definition LCD or plasma screen to truly appreciate it. The games that go along with the PS3 have also received high praise from gamers - particularly the launch title, Resistance: Fall Of Man, which was developed exclusively for the console.
So if you've got a bit of money to spend - and you want the absolute best that gaming has to offer - the PlayStation 3 may well be worth the extra outlay.
