The Microsoft Xbox 360 is one of the next generation of games consoles - and it had no competition until the Nintendo Wii arrived late in 2006, with the PlayStation 3 (PS3) following in early 2007.
Even though the Xbox 360 has been around for longer than these other consoles, it still stacks up well against them. In fact, it can do everything the PS3 can do, including play games, go online and play music and movies. And now that Microsoft has introduced an add-on HD DVD drive for the 360 (which will cost you a couple of hundred dollars extra), it can play high-definition (HD) movies as well.
Given that the Xbox 360 has been available for at least a year longer than the PS3, its main advantage over the competition is the greater number of games you can buy for your system. One favourite is Gears Of War, a first-person shooter that gives Resistance: Fall Of Man (the PS3's launch title) a run for its money.
Another advantage is the Xbox Live! service, which is the online component of the gaming console. You can go online to play against other people from around the world and download additions for your games. It's currently a superior service to Sony's comparable online service for the PlayStation.
And while the Xbox 360 is a slightly fiddlier machine than the PS3 - and is definitely not as intuitive - it does cost slightly less. If you're conscious of interior design, the white casing may not fit in with your home theatre setup, however the good news is that you can now get an all-black Xbox, dubbed the Elite.
