If you're planning on doing anything even remotely outdoorsy, you can't take along just any old digital camera.
You need a camera that is waterproof and shockproof, particularly if you are heading to the beach or the snow. Otherwise there's a good you'll be coming back from your holiday minus a digital camera and your happy snaps.
Olympus makes some of the better digital cameras suited to outdoors use in the form of its Tough Lite range. These cameras are compact enough to carry around with you (the Olympus Tough Lite 850SW weighs in at 136 grams) yet sturdy enough to survive a fair bit of trauma.
Olympus claims the Tough Lite 850SW is shock resistant to 1.5 metres, meaning the average person can drop it and it will survive. It's also snowproof to -10 degrees and waterproof to three metres. Olympus has even incuded several automatic modes for shooting underwater. Aside from this, it's a fairly standard point-and-shoot compact digital camera.
Other specifications of this camera include an 8-megapixel sensor and 3x optical zoom. It comes in three (very striking) colours: glossy black, hot pink and silver. The Tough Lite 850SW carries a recommended retail price of $399 but can often be found for less in stores.
